This listing is for a set of 4 replacement typewriter and/or case feet to refurbish your Adler J2, J4, or J5 typewriter. Please examine the photos carefully to be sure these are a match to your machine. The typewriter feet are round with a diameter of about 21mm, while the case feet–also round–are slightly smaller at 20mm. Both are about 6-7mm high as exposed on the machine or case (not counting hidden parts). As always, manufacturers varied their machine, case, and foot designs over the decades that they produced these machines, so it’s important to ensure that these are the right feet for you. As far as I can tell from my own J2, J4, and J5 machines, as well as scouring the internet J2: These feet should fit for both case and typewriter J3: Not compatible as far as I can tell–let me know if you think differently please! J4: These feet should fit for both case and typewriter J5: These feet should fit the typewriter, but the case may not have any feet These machines are all similar under the hood. Adler also made other portable machines in this period, some of which may also be similar, and may use these feet–but I have not verified this yet! These include Privat, Primus, Junior, Favorit, Gabriele 10/20/25/30/35. These aged typewriters originally had rubber feet that by now likely have the properties resembling hardened chewing gum under a desk, which is the problem with using rubber (think old eraser). Even if they look ok, they probably have no traction at all, so the machine will slide around making typing difficult. They might even mark up your table. You could use a pad, but…not as cool. These are replacement and much improved feet using modern 3D Printing techniques and synthetic materials, I think they look and function better than the original rubber ever could have, and will hopefully last a lot longer! For the most part, if the feet on your machine look just like the mine in the photographs, with similar dimensions and slide-on mounting, they should fit. These are reasonably easy, but not trivial, to replace. To get the old feet off, I lay the machine on it’s back on the carpet, and use a screwdriver, a pliers, and the force of your hands to wiggle them out. In EVERY case, they split in half, with the top part disappearing into the machine, so be sure to retrieve them. Gloves are recommended to avoid cuts. Installing a new foot is simply pushing it into the mounting hole…it’s actually hard to get on, and you need to patiently use a needle nose pliers to help push it into place. The problem is the prong, the entrance is very narrow compared to the hole, if it wasn’t hard to get on it would be loose in the hole. They will go on, but don’t slice the foot in half or cut yourself losing patience! I don’t suggest using a screwdriver, as the middle part is hollow (so it can compress) and there is a risk of cutting it with anything blade-like. To install the case feet is a different matter. They are designed to just push through the hole and latch into place, but it took 6 tries to come up with this design, and it’s still tricky to push through. My technique was to use the needle nose pliers to compress the tip, and then push that first into the hole. Then, use the pliers to carefully push more and more of the tip into the hole area, while holding it in place with the other hand. Once that looks good, drop the pliers, and proceed to sort of screwing it in in one direction, eventually it should pop in, and then be sure to rotate a little more to seat it. The foot may be impossible to get out without cutting it, it really stays put! I designed these to be nearly an identical replacement in function and appearance, but using the advantages of modern technology to engineer materials that were previously impossible. I printed with NinjaFlex TPU (https://ninjatek.com/ninjaflex/), which is nearly indestructible in ordinary use (but a knife or scissors or sharp mounting prong will cut it, just like rubber!), flexible, and very gripping on most surfaces. I printed these at about variable infill (with a flexible gyroid fill structure) for a balance between strength, easy installation but tight fit on the machine, and shock absorption. These look and function just like the original, but should last much longer and be far more durable. Some people may prefer the original dull rubber look, but I actually think these are a superior look to rubber, and the glossy sheen looks great accenting the machines. Rubber hardens within a few years, these should not! I designed these for my own typewriters as shown, and this is an experiment to see if it’s worth my time to make some more for the community. This is a premium 3D printed replacement foot design, I know you can buy molded rubber versions at a perhaps cheaper price, the choice is yours. Many people are out there thumping their chests that they make the “best”, “perfect shore hardness”, or “professional” replacement feet. I have a masters degree in engineering, and have spent 40 years developing advanced technologies to protect our country, founding two startups along the way. I also love typewriters, and I will not thump my chest, but simply promise to develop the best typewriter feet in the world for the community, or I’ll quit selling them.
