Too much grime to make it to full VG, though it does present well. (In fact, I hadn’t looked at the book in almost a year from the time I evaluated it to the time I actually posted it, and I was surprised that such a nice-looking copy in its bag and board was only GD/VG — but it just goes to show how thorough I was last year! pats self on back…) 74FN+22.5012/65 – by Stan Lee/Gene Colan/Jack Kirby/Bob Powell, Watcher app – “Sub-Mariner: When Fails the Quest!; Incredible Hulk: The Wisdom of the Watcher!” Surfaceflat as can be, still shiny and smooth as anythingEdge Wearminimal, except for bottom-right corner on front, where there’s a rough spot you can see in photos.Folds/Creasesno folds except for bottom-left back corner; very faint horizontal crease just below Lorna’s hair (in photo)Wrinklingnone — this copy is very smooth indeedCornersslight blunting, but obviously that one corner has the ding with the very tip missing from front coverPrinting DefectsnoneArrival StampsnoneSpineminor wear, small color breaks/ticks, tiny stress lines consisten with a roughly 6.5 to 7.0 copy.Spine Rollabsolutely noneTears/SplitsnoneStaplesnot discolored or rusty — both look good and go all the way through to the centerfold.Back coverslightly faded with only light overall wearSmudgesa couple show up on back when held up to light; little dot in upper right and a bit of dirt just to the right of Norman Rockwell’s easel (too faint to show in photos)Surface build-uphas a general light coating, no foxing, stray speck here or there.Inner coverslightly tinted with Silver Age tanning, but clean.Page coloroff-whitePage conditionThe first couple also have the ding in lower-right, but otherwise excellent with no sign of brittleness — everything seems well attachedBottom lineAbsolutely no question a mid-grade copy and a bit better. Somewhere in the 6.5 to 7.0 area — I went with FN+ because of the little ding only — a very solid overall copy. 77VF-2.2503/66 – REPRINT (actually Marvel Super-Heroes #32 – Sept, 1972) – by Stan Lee/Gene Colan/Jack Kirby, Leader app – “Sub-Mariner: “To Walk Amongst Men!”; Incredible Hulk: “Trapped in the Land of the Leader!” (actually from TTA 69) — much more affordable way to pick up reading copy of the original Astonish 77. A wonderfully-preserved copy that still shines, has only minimal wear, and pages are still near-white.78VF-2.2504/66 – REPRINT (actually Marvel Super-Heroes #33 – Nov, 1972) – by Stan Lee/Jack Kirby/Bill Everett/Gene Colan (under the name of Adam Austin), Puppet Master app, 1st app Dr. Konrad Zaxon; – “Sub-Mariner: “The Prince and the Puppet”; Incredible Hulk: “The Hulk Must Die” — much more affordable way to pick up reading copy of the original Astonish 78. A wonderfully-preserved copy that still shines, has only minimal wear, and pages are still near-white.79FN-2.2505/66 – REPRINT (actually Marvel Super-Heroes #34 – Jan, 1973) – by Stan Lee/Jack Kirby/Gene Colan/Bill Everett, Hulk vs Hercules, 2nd app Dr. Konrad Zaxon – “Sub-Mariner: When Rises the Behemoth; Incredible Hulk: The Titan and the Torment!” — much more affordable way to pick up reading copy of the original Astonish 79. Copy has clearly been read a couple of times with moderate wear and some wrinkling. Pages in great shape. Definitely better than straight reader grade, but no way it’s full mid-grade.80FN/VF2.2506/66 – REPRINT (actually Marvel Super-Heroes #35 – Mar, 1973) – by Stan Lee/Jack Kirby/Bill Everett/Gene Colan, Mole Man, Puppet Master, Krang app – Sub-Mariner in “To The Death” plus Hulk in “They Dwell in the Depths” — much more affordable way to pick up reading copy of the original Astonish 80. Very nice copy with only minor wear, still with some good shine, little to no wrinkling. Pages look great. (And the Mole Man’s mouth gives away the fact that it’s a new Sal Buscema cover to boot!)81FN/VF33.5007/66 – by Stan Lee/Gene Colan/Jack Kirby/Bill Everett, 1st app Boomerang; 1st app Secret Empire – “Sub-Mariner: When A Monarch Goes Mad!; Incredible Hulk: The Stage Is Set!” Surfaceperfectly flat, almost entirely clean, still has some shine and smooth as anything!Edge Wearminor to moderate wear right on extreme edgesOverall Wearlight handling wear only — very well-preservedFolds/Creasessmall color-breaking fold in front bottom-right cornerWrinklingnone — fabulously smoothCornerssome blunting, notably in the upper-leftPrinting DefectsnoneArrival Stampsnone, but some pricing info writted in red on top of back upper-edge.Spinebook has been read a couple of times with requisite color breaks/spine ticks — most right along extreme edge, not extending much onto front or backSpine Rollabsolutely noneTears/SplitsnoneStaplesslight discoloration but not rusty — both look good and go all the way through to the centerfold.Back covernot as white as it must have been all those decades ago.SmudgesI see only a little, near the back lower edge and coupon when I hold the book up to the light — too faint to show in photosSurface build-uplight coating, mostly near back spine area, no foxingInner coversa light touch of some Silver Age tanning, but clean.Page colorcream to off-whitePage conditionexcellent shape with no sign of brittleness; everything seems well attachedBottom lineThis is a slam-dunk FN/VF copy — won’t make it to VF, but so smooth, some might say VF-, but too many spine ticks for me, so we’ll leave it at FN/VF. Excellent copy that falls just short of “high grade.” 82FN-3.2508/66 – REPRINT (actually Marvel Super-Heroes #37 – July, 1973) – by Stan Lee/Roy Thomas/Gene Colan/Jack Kirby/Bill Everett, Iron Man vs. Sub-Mariner – “Sub-Mariner: The Power of Iron Man!; Incredible Hulk: The Battle Cry of the Boomerang!” — much more affordable way to pick up reading copy of the original Astonish 82. A solid copy that just misses the mark on full mid-grade due to a couple too many light creases on back, but otherwise a nice middle-of-the-road copy with good pages.83VG/FN2.2509/66 – REPRINT (actually Marvel Super-Heroes #38 – Sept, 1973) – by Stan Lee/Jack Kirby, Bill Everett, Sub-Mariner; Hulk – “Sub-Mariner: The Sub-Mariner Strikes!; Incredible Hulk: Less Than Monster, More Than Man!” — much more affordable way to pick up reading copy of the original Astonish 83. Too worn to be mid-grade with some creasing and a small tear, but definitely better than straight reader grade.85VG-12.9511/66 – by Stan Lee/Gene Colan/John Buscema – “Sub-Mariner: And One Shall Die; Incredible Hulk: The Missile and the Monster!” Surfacegenerally flat, clearly handled beforeEdge Wearsignificant chipping on top, mostly on front cover, brittle edgesOverall Wearworn from multiple readingsFolds/Creasesnone on front, bottom-left corner on back flaked off while I was examining it (shown in multiple photos)WrinklingmoderateCornersblunted, and as I mentioned above, one flaked offPrinting Defectsnone, though I suspect the serious chipping might have resulted from some anomaly hereArrival Stamps”70″ written just above Hulk’s right fistSpineworn from multiple readings, but still intact with only minimal ticksSpine RollnoneTears/Splitsno splits, minor tear just above upper stapleStaplesdiscolored — both solid though and go all the way through to the centerfold.Back coverfaded and moderately worn from handlingSmudgesI see only one when I hold the book up to the light, just behind Normal RockwellSurface build-upgeneral coating of build-up on backInner coversSilver Age tanningPage colorcreamPage conditionsolid enough, except for the top of the first couple of pages, which are also chipped. Some brittle edges, but everything attached.Bottom lineIt’s a reader grade copy and definitely nothing to write home about. I’m putting it just below VG due to that chipping. 85FN-2.2511/66 – REPRINT (actually Marvel Super-Heroes #40 – Nov, 1973) – by Stan Lee/Gene Colan, John Buscema, 2nd app Gorki – “Sub-Mariner: And One Shall Die; Incredible Hulk: The Missile and the Monster!” — much more affordable way to pick up reading copy of the original Astonish 85. Looks average with moderate wear, but I felt it had just a bit too much wear on back to be full mid-grade.86FN-19.5012/66 – by Stan Lee/Jerry Grandenetti, John Buscema, 1st app Hulk-Killer – “Sub-Mariner: The Wrath of Warlord Krang!; Incredible Hulk: The Birth of the Hulk-Killer!” Surfaceflat, still with some shine, very smooth!Edge Wearminor and confined mostly to extreme edgesOverall Wearstructurally sound with nothing more that moderate overall wearFolds/Creasesnothing in front, only faint hint in lower-left corner of backWrinklingnone — this baby is smoothCornersonly ever so slight bluntingPrinting DefectsnoneArrival Stampssmall “12” written over CCA boxSpinebook has been read multiple times, but wear confined mostly right on edge of spine, not spilling over much.Spine Rollabsolutely noneTears/Splitsnone at all — it’s intactStaplesnot discolored or rusty — both look good and go all the way through to the centerfold.Back coverfaded slightly over the decades; edge wear just a hair more on this sideSmudgesa faint one or two — nothing that would show unless held up to the lightSurface build-upnothing more than a light coating, no foxingInner coversshow Silver Age tanning, but clean.Page coloroff-whitePage conditionvery nice with no sign of brittleness; everything well attachedBottom lineEdge of spine a bit worn, yes, but it has so much else going for it, I still think it falls just short of mid-grade. 87VG+12.5001/67 – by Stan Lee/Bill Everett/John Buscema, 2nd app Hulk-Killer – “Sub-Mariner: Moment of Truth!; Incredible Hulk: The Humanoid and the Hero!” Surfaceflat, some loss of gloss, still quite smoothEdge Wearmoderate overall, with more showing in backOverall Weargeneral loss of original reflectivityFolds/Creasesvery little in front; lower-left corner in backWrinklingnext to none; very smooth surfaceCornersblunted in upper-left, only slight in other cornersPrinting DefectsnoneArrival Stamps”70″ written in grese pencil just below titleSpinesignificant wear right on edge, easily seen in photosSpine Rollnone at allTears/Splitsnothing other than the minor flakes you see near staples.Staplesdefinitely discolored, but hanging on — both go all the way through to the centerfold.Back coverfaded for sure and with general wear along edges, particularly near bottomSmudgesseveral that show on both sides, but mostly only when held up to the lightSurface build-uplight coating, no foxing.Inner covershas Silver Age tanningPage colorcream to off-whitePage conditionall looked good; not brittleness; everything attachedBottom lineDefinitely on the lower-end of the scale but still better than a straight-up reader copy 89aVG/FN14.7503/67 – by Stan Lee/Bill Everett/Gil Kane, Stranger app, 2nd app Servo-Robot – “Sub-Mariner: The Prince and the Power!; Incredible Hulk: Then, There Shall Come a Stranger!” Surfaceflat, shiny, bright colors, mostly smooth, except where noted belowEdge Wearvery minor, except as you can see, there is a tear in upper-right that is on every page. Looks very nice when held up to the light. Almost perfectly smooth even, though not like glass. Very minimal edge and corner wear (all this is plain enough in the photos, which I’ve provided many of, so take a good look). No fold or crease marks. No printing defects. Little store mark “12” visible in CCA box. Spine in used, but still great shape — easily upper-mid grade with only a few very tiny color breaks. One tiny dimple to the far left of the Hulk’s mid-section. No spine roll, no tears, no splits, no discolored or rusty staples, both of which look good and do indeed go all the way through to the centerfold. Back cover shows some light fading, has some surface build-up, and a light stress line near bottom of spine. No folds or creases here either — easily in upper-mid-grade shape. Inner covers show light Silver Age tanning and are clean. Pages in fabulous shape and are cream to off-white. All looked good when I carefully leafed through the book with no sign of brittleness, and everything seems well attached. Bottom line is that this is certainly no high-grade specimen, but is an absolutely rock-solid upper-mid-grade copy.99FN1.9501/68 – REPRINT (actually Marvel Super-Heroes #54 – Nov, 1975) – by Stan Lee/Archie Goodwin/Marie Severin/Dan Adkins, 2nd app Seth – “When Falls the Holocaust!; When the Monster Wakes!” — much more affordable way to pick up reading copy of the original Astonish 99.
