I’m a hand tool woodworker like you, and I use these saws on a daily basis and occasionally I sell some because I can’t take them with me. The reason these vintage saws are so highly sought after by today’s woodworkers is they were manufactured to exacting standards with technologies like dual taper ground, hand tensioned saw plates that make them functionally superior to contemporary full-size handsaws. Most woodworkers haven’t had the opportunity to use a truly sharp handsaw, much less a premium vintage saw that has been precision tuned. When you do, it’s an eye-opening experience that will bring a smile to your face and a new level of satisfaction to your woodworking. COMPLETE DESCRIPTION OF THIS SAW: World War II era Disston D-42 ?Victory? 10 PPI crosscut saw. This is the most collectible version of what is arguably Disston?s finest handsaw, the D-115 which was introduced to commemorated the 75th anniversary of the company?s founding. As described by Disstonian Institute ?the D- 115 was a London Spring steel blade saw with a rosewood handle and a fancy etching. It?s not a saw that Joe Framer have used to build tract houses. Disston called it the diamond Jubilee saw. The saw was impressive and there must?ve been a market for it, because Disston continued the saw in one form or another until 1953.? The D-42 is arguably the most sought after, collectible version of this saw; produced during World War II with walnut carved handle, highest grade of steel, saw plate double taper grinding and hand tensioning. The D 42 ?Victory? saw is prized for both its superb top-of-the-line functionality and for its elaborate etch. Etch famously features the American Eagle holding the Liberty Bell superimposed over the ?V for Victory? symbol popularized by Winston Churchill with the words ?Proclaim Liberty throughout the World? below. Etch on this saw is about 70% visible Beyond the historically etch, functionally this saw represents the peak of the saw makers art when both spring steel making and saw making were at their zenith. Plate and tote on this saw are in perfect condition with no blemishes or defects. 10 PPI pitch is my favorite for kiln dried 4/4 stock ? ideal combination of speed, accuracy and smooth sawn surface. There is nothing mystical about this process, but at the highest levels it does require a significant amount of skill and experience. I’ve taught lots of people to sharpen their own hand saws. Most of them end up sending their best saws back to me to be sharpened because they want the best performance from these fundamental tools and would rather spend their time woodworking, then sharpening the 15 or so saws it takes to become proficient. · The cutting edges of the saw teeth have been hand filed under magnification, using premium quality Swiss made files to achieve the ideal, consistent rake and fleam angles to maximize sharpness, edge durability and present the cutting edges of the teeth to the work at the best “angle of attack” for its intended use (e.g. ripping vs. crosscutting, rapidly breaking down rough stock vs. making “finish” cuts leaving a smooth sawn surface, etc.). This means the saw will start straight, track accurately, cut quickly and stay sharp for a long time. · The saw plate is slick and smooth so that only the optimal amount of ?set? needs to be added to the teeth based on the taper ground cross section of the individual saw plate. This means the sawyer removes less wood with each stroke, which makes the saw cut faster. In addition because there is only the needed clearance between the saw plate and edges of the kerf (and not too much as is commonly the case), the saw will effortlessly track straight and true to the layout line with little effort and no wandering. The plate has been treated with Evaporust to stop it even the microscopic rusting process you can’t see, hand sanded progressively through the grits to 600 and polished with four progressively finer grades of abrasives on the buffing wheel. · The apex of the teeth have been repeatedly “jointed” multiple times throughout the sharpening process resulting in a uniform height tooth line, ensuring all the teeth are working equally when cutting. This means the saw will start accurately and easily right where you place it, cut easily with little downward pressure and move smoothly through the stroke with little risk of “catching” a tooth, and kinking the saw plate. In some cases, I use a “breasted” tooth line (convex curve), that allows more teeth to remain engaged in the cut given the typical “rocking” motion of your arm during the saw stroke. This is particular helpful with coarser pitch saws. · Finally, sloped gullets are shaped in between each tooth by carefully and at the right time in the sharpening process moving the file through all three axis (think high school geometry — X, Y, Z), with the handle of the file lower than the toe and consistent with the desired rake and fleam angles. The horizontal ‘slope” of the file stroke creates a larger gullet than can be achieved by simply filing along two axis, which allows the saw teeth to carry more sawdust per stroke, speeding the cutting process. Important because even sharp saw teeth stop cutting when the gullet is full of sawdust. This technique was largely lost with the advent of automated saw filing machines that moved the file along only the X and Y axis. Accurately creating sloped gullets while maintaining all other appropriate tooth line geometry, is a difficult skill to master, requires extensive practice and is only done well by the very best saw sharpeners. Ironically, sloped gullets which are the hallmark of the very best sharpeners, can make a saw appeared to the untrained eye to be haphazardly and “unevenly” sharpened. When viewed from the side, sloped gullets can make it appear as though every other tooth set away from the viewer is “deeper” than the others. This is just an optical illusion, what you’re seeing is the “sloped gullets” that have been created in front of the teeth set away from the viewer. When viewed from the other side of the saw, it appears exactly the same.
