eBay You are bidding on one J Bradford fenced wood sash coping molding plane as pictured. There are some condition issues, so please keep reading. It is marked with “BRADFORD PORTLAND” (bordered stamp) and owner “B OAKES” on the front end, and it is unmarked on the back end. The iron is unmarked. Overall length of the body is about 9-1/2″. The profile is a fenced sash coping plane. The last picture shows the back end of the plane (not the front) sitting on graph paper with 1/4″ squares. The iron is set at a very low angle, probably the lowest I have ever seen in a wood bodied molding plane. It is about 32 or 33 degrees up from horizontal. Joseph Bradford made planes in Portland, Maine, from 1837 to 1884. Please see the book American Wooden Planes 5th Edition for more information about him, and it rates the mark on this plane as two stars for rarity, which is the rarest of the 4 marks he used. It describes him as making cooper’s, carpenter’s, and ship jointer’s tools. The fence is not in its original position, which is discerned from the interruption in Bradford’s mark across the two sections. If the fence became worn, the solution was to shave it down and move it over. I didn’t try to take the fence off to see if there was another set of holes in the main body. Condition is otherwise fair, showing lots of wear especially in the profile area, with some chips along the lower left hand edge of the body and of the fence. There are 4 empty little nail holes from a removed filler strip on the upper left side. It came to me with half of the filler strip in place and half gone, so I discarded the strip and the 2 little nails that were holding it. My guess is that a prior owner was trying to use it like a shoot board plane. The wood has a variety of stains. The wedge shows a lot of wear to the finial, and the leading edge of the opening for it in the body is cracked in both corners, which is a result of forcing the wedge into the body given the very low angle it sits at. The wedge is also a very snug fit for width. The profile is reasonably straight if you sight down it. The iron and wedge both appear to be original to the plane. USPS POSTAGE RATE INCREASES: I use the Post Office for everything, and yes, the shipping charges just keep going up and up. The Post Office now has several prices increases during each year, raising a few things but not everything at each increase. And they now raise their rates during the Holidays, which means early October to late January. Their big increases are in January, timed to start at the end of the Holiday rates, and this year is no exception. And it’s not just the postage rates, the insurance charges and the delivery signature charges have also gone up. There is now a surcharge for Priority Mail packages over 20″ long, and another for Priority Mail packages over 30″ long, because those longer packages won’t fit in their automatic machines. And the Post Office has discontinued the Regional Flat Rate boxes, which were often less expensive for certain sizes and weights. I try to pick the best shipping option for each listing, based both on what is the least expensive and on what I think is needed to protect the item. If the value is $250 or over, eBay requires your signature at delivery for the buyer and seller protections to be in effect. SALES TAX: Interstate sales tax is now the reality on all the major selling websites including eBay. If I ship to a state where eBay is required to collect sales tax, eBay will charge you the sales tax for your location. There is lots of information available from eBay that explains it in much more detail. The sales tax is completely out of my hands — I don’t have anything to do with deciding whether to charge tax, I don’t have anything to do with deciding the tax rate, and I never see any of the funds that are collected, they go directly to eBay. SELLING OUTSIDE OF EBAY: Why would I risk my lengthy good standing with eBay to save you a couple of dollars? Especially when you ask on an email that is sent through the eBay email system? Please don’t ask, the answer is no. INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: I no longer ship Internationally other than Canada. If you are in Canada, ask for what the shipping would cost, but be prepared for it to be $$$$$. AUCTIONS: I won’t end an auction listing early to sell it to you directly. As a bidder, I really dislike going back at the end of an auction to bid, only to discover that the seller had ended the auction early. So I won’t do that for you, or to you. PACKAGING: Please check my feedback — I package well.
