This is a rare scrapbook page with a complete souvenir program from the 1914-15 American Tour of the Incomparable ANNA PAVLOVA on one side and programs, pages and newspaper clippings from the 1916 and 1917 Detroit, Michigan engagements of SERGE de DIAGHILEFF’s BALLET RUSSE featuring WASLAW (Vaslav) NIJINSKY on the other side ….. ANNA PAVLOVA was supported by LAURENT NOVIKOFF, ALEXANDRE VOLININE, IVAN CLUSTINE, SERGEI ZAILICH, Mlle. STEPHINA PLASKOWIECZKA and M. OUKRAINSKY with THEODORE STIER conducting ….. Biography: Mlle. ANNA PAVLOVA (1881-1931) is widely regarded as one of the finest classical ballet dancers in history and was most noted as a Principal artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet and the Ballets Russes of Serge Diaghilev. Pavlova is most recognized for the creation of the role “The Dying Swan” and with her own company, would become the first ballerina to tour ballet around the world. Pavlova’s passion for the art of ballet was realized when her mother took her to a performance of Marius Petipa’s original production of The Sleeping Beauty at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre. The lavish spectacle made an impression on the young Pavlova, and at the age of eight her mother took her to audition for the renowned Imperial Ballet School where she was finally accepted at age ten. Upon graduating, she began to perform at the Maryinsky Theatre, debuting on September 19th, 1899. In 1907, Anna Pavlova began her first tour, to Moscow, and by 1910 was appearing at the Metropolitan Opera House in America. In 1914, she was traveling through Germany on her way to England when Germany declared war on Russia. At that time, her connection to Russia was for all intents broken. For the rest of her life, Anna Pavlova toured the world with her own company and kept a home in London, where her exotic pets were constant company when she was there. While her contemporary, Isadora Duncan, introduced revolutionary innovations to dance, Anna Pavlova remained largely committed to the classic style. She was known for her daintiness, frailness, lightness and both wittiness and pathos. Her last world tour was in 1928-29 and her last performance in England in 1930. Anna Pavlova appeared in a few silent films: one, The Immortal Swan, she shot in 1924 but it was not shown until after her death. Anna Pavlova died of pleurisy in the Netherlands in 1931. Biography: Born in Kiev, VASLAV NIJINSKY (1890 -1950) was the second son of Thomas Laurentiyevich Nijinsky and Eleonora Bereda; both his parents were celebrated dancers, and his father in particular was famous for his virtuosity and enormous leaps. The Nijinsky’s had their own dance company and performed throughout the Russian Empire. Nijinsky’s childhood was mostly spent in the Caucasus, where he danced as a small child with his brother Stanislav and his little sister Bronislawa. His father, noticing the child’s great disposition for dancing, gave him his first lessons. At the age of nine, Nijinsky entered the Imperial School of Dancing in St. Petersburg, where his teachers, the foremost of the time, soon discovered his extraordinary talent. When he was 16 years-old, they urged him to graduate and enter the Mariinsky Theatre. Nijinsky declined, preferring to fulfill the customary period of study. At the time he already had been heralded as the “eighth wonder of the world” and the “Vestris of the North”. During his school years he appeared at the Mariinsky Theatre, first as a member of the Corps de Ballet, later in small parts. Nijinsky was graduated in the spring of 1907 and on July 14th, 1907, joined the Mariinsky Theatre as a soloist. His first appearance was in the ballet La Source with the Russian ballerina Julia Sedova as his partner; the public and the ballet critics burst out immediately in wild enthusiasm. As danseur noble, he danced all of the leading parts at the Mariinsky Theatre and at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he was a guest performer. His success was phenomenal. In 1909 Sergey Diaghilev, former assistant to the administrator of the Imperial Theatres, was commissioned by the Grand Duke Vladimir to organize a ballet company of the members of the Mariinsky and Bolshoi theatres. Diaghilev decided to take the company to Paris in the spring and asked Nijinsky to join as principal dancer. Its first performance was on May 17th, 1909, at the Theatre du Chatelet. Nijinsky took Paris by storm. Diaghilev and Nijinsky became lovers; the Ballets Russes gave Nijinsky the chance to expand his art and experiment with dance and choreography; he created new directions for male dancers while becoming internationally famous. In 1912 he began his career as a choreographer. He created for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes the ballets L’Aprés-midi d’un faune, Jeux, and Le Sacre du printemps. Till Eulenspiegel was produced in the United States without Diaghilev’s personal supervision. His work in the field of choreography was generally considered daringly original. In 1913, Nijinsky married Hungarian Romola de Pulszky while on tour with the company in South America, which caused a break with Diaghilev. In 1919, at the age of 29, Nijinsky retired from the stage, owing to a nervous breakdown, which was diagnosed as schizophrenia. He lived from 1919 until 1950 in Switzerland, France, and England, and died in London in 1950. Nijinsky is buried in the cemetery of Montmartre in Paris. DETAILS: The oversized 20 page Anna Pavlowa program measures 9″ X 12 1/4″ inches, is bound by a brown cord and includes program notes on each of the ballets, several sepia toned photos and promotional text. The souvenir program and Nijinsky programs, pages and clippings are all attached to a black scrapbook page ….. CONDITION: (Please Note!) These items are all attached to a black scrapbook page. The Anna Pavlowa program is complete, but there are several related newspaper clippings attached to the last inside advertising page (shown in the seventh scanned image). The clippings have left some discoloration to the facing inside back cover. The Nijinsky programs, pages and clippings show moderate creasing, minor edge wear and the individual who compiled the scrapbook has left handwritten comments on a number of pages. Despite these flaws, this rare collection will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or dance historian. This set will be carefully packaged for safe transport.
